In the traditional homes of Cyprus, whether they were village properties of the peasant class or the more affluent town houses, both were built with the climate in mind. You will see that there were internal windows and door in the town houses, with plakka or stone slab floors, even in the upstairs floors. These floors were placed on mud or earth layers.

 Thick walls of up to a meter provided a decent R value (The technical term for insulation value) and in the mornings buckets of water would be sloshed on the floors, serving more than one purpose. One was the obvious, 'to clean them', the other was to re dampen the mud so that through the heat of the day the water would evaporate, the breeze would blow through the house from the internal and external windows thus creating the nearest thing to free air conditioning ever invented. Nowadays we have moved away from such methods towards the costly use of electrical appliances and wasteful un-renewable energy sources. We need to demand a return to sustainable energy use and conservation of tried and tested housing solutions for the climate we live in.

It will only happen through demand it seems and unfortunately the demand up to now has been for the cheapest or the most impressive. Lets impress our children and grandchildren and spend the  few extra euros to build a future for them that will last as long at least as the houses we have been hurriedly knocking down before a preservation order is slapped on them.

There are those working in the right direction, but we need more of those with vision on both sides.
